Retaining walls generally serve the purpose of holding back earth to level surrounding landscape. They can be used for anything from leveling a section of your yard to holding up an entire roadway.
There are basically two types of retaining walls that we build, Natural Stone or Manufactured Block. In these two catergories there are many options to choose from.
Natural Stone is a good choice if you would like to blend in with the natural environment. Some of the more popular types are blasted rock, large boulder, field stone or cut granite.
Manufactured Block has become a popular option theses days. Some of the advantages of manufactured block is the quicker assembly, cheaper cost and great strength due to interlocking blocks.
Building a Retaining wall involves several steps. It is important to build a quality wall or it will not last and could become a hazard or fall down completely. This is usually because of poor construction and lack of drainage. The first thing we need to do when building a wall is excavate the area using an excavator and other equipment. This includes removing trees, stumps and rocks, digging a base and creating a solid foundation to support the wall. As the preparative work is finished up, a laser transit is used to fine tune the grade. Now its time to start building the retaining wall. As the retaining wall starts to take shape its important to install drainage as you go. This will ensure that the wall drains properly and lasts a long time. It is also important to compact the backfill as the wall is built. When the wall is assembled and everthing is compacted, it is time to add the finishing touches. This can include loam, gravel, stone or other materials to finish the look.
The Cost of building a Retaining wall varies greatly with the size of the wall and the material used. All jobs are estimated individually and we offer free estimates. We are best suited to build walls larger than two feet tall by ten feel long or walls requiring the use of equipment. Very small walls, such as flower beds or hand built walls, are best completed by a mason or landscaper.
